Knights Prevail: Gators Cursed in the Amway Yet Again

Congratulations to the home team, the UCF Knights Men’s Basketball Team took on (and overcame) the #16 ranked Florida Gators tonight.  While we’re huge Gator fans, even we can recognize a great effort when we see one.  Over 13,000 fans cheered as UCF led Florida in a 57-54 victory.

Michael Jordan's son Marcus is a leader for the Golden Knights.

The two teams met in the Florida Citrus Sports Shoot Out and had the honor of playing the first collegiate game in the new Amway Center. This is actually a second for the Gators. Back in 1988, they also had the honor of playing in the first collegiate game in the old Amway Arena.  Top 5 editor Bess Auer was a cheerleader at that game and remembers it well.  ”We lost to Stanford,” she sighed. “I guess the Gators and Amway just don’t go well together.”

Perhaps not, but the Golden Knights sure do…congrats!

Gators vs. Seminoles: GAME DAY!

Okay, for those of you not paying attention, the Top 5 is firmly in the University of Florida camp… BIG TIME!  And, although we’re having a miserable football season, we still proudly rise to the in-state rivalry of Florida vs. Florida State.

So, we’re going with the Gators today… at least until half-time when we’ll re-evaluate the score! Ha!

And, Rivalry Weekend extends to round ball as well, with the Gators and Seminoles meeting up tomorrow at 7:30 pm on FSN/Sun Sports.  And, while we searched for a decent video featuring both teams, we just couldn’t find one, so you’re stuck with a totally awesome Gator Basketball video.  You Seminoles are welcome to either grin and bear it or post a link to your own in the comments below. :)

Central Florida Swimmers Are Awesome!

Occasionally the Top 5 blogs about “residents done good” and this would definitely fall under that category:  Two Central Florida swimmers have signed letters of intent with the national swim powerhouse University of Florida. Blue Dolfin swimmer Matthew Curby and Highlander Aquatics swimmer Harrison Curley have indicated their commitment to the Gators. Both nationally-ranked swimmers were also high school state champions for their respective schools.

Yes, my hubby @swimmerjoe swam for the Gators as well, so this blog is a personal one for me, too! ;)

Congrats to these young men for representing the State of Florida so well by earning scholarships to one of the strongest Division I teams in the nation. Woot!

Orlando Magic Fans – Do You Know the New Rules?

Brian Feldman knows the rules… kind of.  (No, Orlando-based performance artist Brian Feldman is NOT going to impersonate a professional basketball player, although Shaquille O’Neal recently impersonated a performance artist.)

Instead, Feldman is presenting “Foul! Official Rules of the National Basketball Association 2010-2011 as Read by Brian Feldman” in order to explain the rules, straight from the horse’s mouth, so to speak.

Tonight, at the Orlando Magic’s season opener, Feldman will read from the NBA’s Official 2010-2011 Rule Book, all 59 pages of it, plus the 2 extra pages of illustrations.  Feldman will be reading aloud while located across from the Amway Center (originally known as the Orlando Events Center), outside, across from the Orlando Magic Team Shop presented by Adidas, in the manner of a street preacher.

Tell it to me, brother!

So, why is Orlando’s most impressive performance artist doing this? Well, in his own words: “If you’re gonna argue with the refs this season, you gotta know the rules.”

Gator Nation: Rumors of our death are greatly exaggerated…

I heard a dirty rumor that my University of Florida Gators lost their third consecutive game last night. They were saying this hasn’t happened since the late 80s, and these gossip-mongers now have me in a deep, dark funk.

You see, the Gators just don’t lose three in a row. We don’t even lose two in a row. (Heck, we don’t even lose one unless it means we can still somehow manage to win the SEC and vie for the national championship with that one meaningless, regular season loss.)

Why don’t we lose?

We’re Gator Nation, baby, and we. just. don’t. do. it.

Florida State loses, of that we’re sure. Bobby Bowden may be a god to football, but even he was fallible, especially towards the end.  (And, the Gators don’t even consider football played south of the Ocala Forest as real pigskin, so please don’t bring up Miami and some obsolete swagger.)

And what about the rest of the SEC?  Well, unless your name is Alabama, who we allowed to be ranked #1 pre-season this year–we are gracious Gators after all and don’t mind sharing the spotlight early in the season–we don’t really worry about our lesser SEC foes.  (However, on occasion we will root for Steve Spurrier to win a few games; deep down he is a Gator after all. That and Gamecocks are never good enough to be a real threat!)

But the vicious rumor mill works triple time when the University of Florida is involved.  Gators seem to have a bright orange and blue target on our backs… that’s just what happens when jealousy is at work, you know.

Lies! Deceit! Hatefulness!

What’s this about Tim Tebow leaving us high and dry and that Urban Meyer has no offense?  The entire Gator Nation became Mile High fans (you’re welcome, Denver) and Trey Burton is developing nicely. (John Brantley is just saving a spot for him.)

And what’s this about Chris Rainey threatening girlfriends?  (Just hateful rumors from rival fans… they follow Brett Favre everywhere, too, you know.)

So, don’t try to show me the headlines this morning; turn off Sports Center; tell Craig James to keep his big mouth shut and to maybe let former Gator QB Jesse Palmer talk more.

Tell them all to be quiet because I know Gator alumna Erin Andrews will tell me the truth… when she leapt from former University of Florida Dazzler to Dancing with the Stars, the orange and blue never quite washed out.  She knows what we all know when these hateful rumors of the Great Gator’s death run rampant… and here it is:

“Wait ’til next year!”

Florida Tuskers: Rooting for the Home Team!

I must admit I feel bad…I should have made the trip to the Citrus Bowl before this.  The Florida Tuskers are Central Florida’s home team, and so we all should be heading out for the game! So, my hubby, @SwimmerJoe, and I decided to do something about this… so we’ve gathered about 60 friends and are heading to seats on the 50 in order to root away…Yep, we’ll be with the Blue Dolfin Swim Team yelling, “Go Tuskers!”

Now why should you go see the Tuskers, too? Well, to see some quality football. The Tuskers are part of a quality professional football league whose players include many former stand outs in the NFL. (Think legendary UCF and then NFL starting quarterback Daunte Culpepper good!)

Tusker's starting quarterback Brooks Bollinger

And, on a personal note, I went to high school with Bret Munsey, fellow Winter Park High School Hall of Famer and former head coach of the Philadelphia Soul, who now helps out the Tuskers on the sidelines as Director of Player Personnel.  It is fun to see when a friend is making a go of something he loves. (And is pretty good at!)

So, even if you can’t make it tonight’s game, put the Tuskers down as something go root for and support this season. Yeah!
